Bioidentical hormones are natural hormones that have the same molecular structure as the hormones made by your body; therefore your body can metabolize them with minimal side effects.
Many women as they go through menopause or suffer from premenstrual disorders are made to feel as if they need antidepressants. Most of the time all they need is for their hormones to be balanced.
Bioidentical hormone replacement can be individualized to each patient so that we use the lowest dose of hormone for the best symptom relief. We work with compounding pharmacists to obtain the best combination of hormones for each patient. The compounding pharmacists can provide the patient with alternate forms of hormone administration as well. They compound topical creams, oral troches, oral disintegrating tablets, or capsules. The hormones can also be manufactured in pellet form for implantation under the skin every 3 to 6 months.
Both men and women can benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement.
We begin by testing the hormone levels. We usually recommend saliva hormone testing as we have seen the best results with this form of testing, but we can also check the various hormone levels with blood work. Often we recommend that the stress hormones be tested as well.
Initially we will test the hormones every 3-4 months until the patient has good symptom relief and balance then the testing is usually done annually.
We find this individualized approach to hormone replacement gives our patients the best symptom relief and improved quality of life.
